Celtic Championship Wrestling are gearing up for Revolution VI, the biggest event of the Irish Wrestling calendar. But each fighter will have their work cut out for them if they want to be crowned champion at Revolution – the “Road to Revolution” consists of a number of competitions, with only the most worthy claiming the top spots, and it all begins Saturday 21st April at The Commons Inn, with an event called Painspotting.

I was invited along to witness one of their many training sessions and was amazed by the passion and discipline of these underground fighters. Arriving at the door and feeling like I might be walking into a scene from Fight Club, I was greeted by none other than Hard Knocks Steve Savage, originally from Limerick. His enthusiasm for the sport was obvious.

It wasn’t long before participants were being thrown to the floor, again and again. I don’t know how it felt to hit that ring, but the sound was a violent, punishing crack every time. This would be followed by comments on their fighting from their trainer Luke Barry aka. the reigning CCW tag team champion Marion Armstrong; sometimes good comments, others bad, but almost invariably: “And again!”

Armstrong explained, it’s all about the audience: “It’s the definition of sports entertainment.” And they have only a few sessions left to train for Painspotting. Among the many fighters to watch out for at Painspotting is current women’s champion Raven Creed who will be riding on the success of OTT, the first all-female wrestling event in Ireland which was held in Dublin recently.

The main event, Revolution, will be held on June 2nd in Cork this year and is a high profile affair. In the past it has attracted such stars as WWE’s Sabu and wrestler Will Osprey, a legend in Japan and England. It is at this event that the all-Ireland Heavyweight Champion will be crowned.

At each event, there will be a family friendly show at 3:30pm, followed by doors for the adult event at 7.30pm.
